Getting to Know Our Gynae Clinics in Town: Novena

For the past few months, we have visited various Astra Women’s Specialists clinics in the heartlands. Today, we will be rounding off our series by showing you our flagship clinic located on Level 5 at Mount Elizabeth Novena Specialist Centre.

Astra Women’s Specialist at Novena is helmed by 3 experienced O&G specialists- Dr Cathryn Chan, Dr Henry Cheng and Dr James Lee. In our previous videos, you have met Dr Cathryn Chan, who sub-specialises in fertility and IVF, and Dr James Lee, who sub-specialises in urogynaecology, in addition to the general obstetrics and gynaecology services.

In this video, we will be meeting Dr Henry Cheng, who sub-specialises in high-risk pregnancies and maternal-fetal medicine. This is for mummies out there looking for pregnancy care!

A pregnancy is considered high-risk when:

• The mother has concurrent medical problems like hypertension and diabetes.
• The mother is 40 years old and above.
• Ladies who have had major surgeries done on their womb e.g. open surgeries, laparoscopies etc.
• The foetus has structural defects or chromosomal problems

As an obstetrician sub-specialising in high-risk pregnancy, Dr Henry Cheng takes care of both mother and child especially when more intensive care is required. In fact, he has also done surgery on the baby while they are still in-utero (i.e. still in the mother’s womb)!

Gynaecology services at Astra Women’s Specialists (Novena)
Ladies are able to get a whole range of services at our clinic in Novena. For example, the treatment room is equipped with machines such as the colposcopy machine. It is used for procedures that involve looking at the cervix, such as investigating an abnormal pap smear, performing cone biopsy and so forth.

The camera attached to the machine not only takes pictures, but it also is able to take videos so the patients can also look at what is happening in real-time.
